St George and dragon
Hi all,
Here is another unknown that I am hoping someone can identify. It measures 58mm high. Thanks, Tinto |

Most of the larger versions of St George and the Dragon tend to have him holding the spear above his shoulder - although some of the SBP have it underarm style. |

St. George & dragon
Hi,
Try the St. George's English Rifle Regiment, New South Wales, Australia. Worn between 1900 and 1930, probably carried across from pre-Federation (1901?). The hat badge was 34mm high and the collar badge was 59mm in facing pairs. Info from JK Cossum Part 2. Regards, Stephen. |

Hi there,
It is very similar to the collar badges of the 1st Middlesex RVc (Victoria Rifles) (Churchill 1482 - Page 234) or 6th Middlesex RVC (St George's) (Churchill 1483). But there are enough differences to make me think this is pure co-incidence rather than being for these units At 58mm high, this doesn't match the collars size wise. Also both pictures show the spear being held 'over-arm' with the hand at the top of the spear, whereas this one has the spear held 'under-arm' and some of the spear visible above the hand. Not a particularly clear pictures in Churchill to make out other details. I don't know whether the cap or pouch badges for these units would have differed enough to incorporate these differences. Thank you Everyone, for your valuable input.
I had seen on the Australian diggerhistory website, the same shaped badge for St George's English Rifle Regiment, possible mine is a collar but a pretty large one at 58mm. In Kipling and King Vol.1, there is the helmet plate of the 1st Middlesex (Victoria) Rifle Volunteer Corps (KK1521). The centre of this is similar, but I think as Viletone suggests, mine may be a pouch badge. Interesting, the different ways of holding the lance. Cheers, Tinto |
