Default Cast LRDG cap badge

Hello to all, and a happy new year to you. I thought some of you might be interested in seeing this LRDG badge. I ran across this last year, and couldn't resist it. I know it's rough, but I liked the lugs (which look Egyptian made to me). It has a lovely patina of grime and fuzz, which doesn't prove anything except that it's been someplace grimy and fuzzy.

Best wishes, Donovan

Donovan, I'll be honest I don't like this. It looks like it has been artificially aged and bears too many similarities to known copies. The outer ring, tail touching the leg and the uniform criss crossing on the body are all bad signs for me. I think this badge has been "roughed up" and aged using maybe acid or artifical oxidation?

Just my opinion, I may be completely wrong!

Thanks Jack, you're probably right. The flat lugs and the patina overcame my caution. If it was artificially aged, someone did an excellent job of it.

Regards, Donovan

Hi Donovan,

Hmm, not so sure people did a good job aging that badge. I have never seen an original LRDG badge looking as ugly as this one...

There are plenty of pictures of original LRDG beret badges on the Forum. Please compare and look for the differences.

Cheers!

Johan

If you visit dugup.co.uk you will find a No52 commando cap badge, V-force cap badge plus an MPAJA cap badge all with the same lugs as on your badge. I'm having the impression these are all fakes.

And then there is this, 'supposedly' Italian cast... Most Allied Italian made badges look a lot better than this, and weren't cast to start with.
Haven't seen this one here on the Forum.

Rgds,

Thomas.

Sounds like the consensus is that this one is a real dog! Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it. On the bright side, it was an inexpensive mistake.

Regards, Donovan

Default Other LRDG badges OK?

Setting aside the above-mentioned cast badge, I'd appreciate feedback on these other LRDG cap badges in my collection. As Johan recommended, I've compared them to photos of other LRDG badges shown on the forum. They appear to me to be consistent with known originals, but I'd welcome the opinions of others with more experience in this area.

Hi Donovan,

To me they all 3 look good! I think that first one had a lug repaired, but that does not matter much.

Since some fakes are really clever, a good idea also is to check with Shaun Aumua. He is a one the best experts on LRDG beret badges.

Cheers,

Johan
