Canadian Forestry Corps insignia SWW
Notes from archives.
The Canadian Forestry Corps was approved a triangular dark green formation patch in February 1943. It was triangular, 3 inch base and 2 inches high. The patch was dark green, similar in colour to 4 Canadian Armoured Division patches. Quote: No patches or titles other than (the triangular patch) ... are authorized to be worn by Cdn Forestry Corps personnel. (Cable from CMHQ to NDHQ Feb 23, 1943.)
In the same set of documents, there is a series of communications expressing concern over the differences in the type of insignia being worn by reinforcements from Canada and the patterns being issued in the UK. (These are dated from the spring of 1944.) The concern centered around the need to issue Canadian overseas pattern insignia to these troops as they arrived. There was an appreciation that this was wasteful and inefficient situation, which could be resolved if the depots in Canada would issue overseas pattern insignia before embarkation. An investigation revealed at least 17 titles different in Canadian issue versus UK Canadian patterns. Top of the list was the Canadian Forestry Corps.
This appears to explain the two patterns of insignia that exist for the CFC. The embroidered shoulder title, Canadian Forestry Corps appears to be the Canadian issue, and the triangular formation patch, the UK issue.
