CF Branch badge varieties...
When the Canadian Forces were unified in 1968, most of the former corps were re-organized as Branches. The Branches were issued new enamel cap badges. It is now over 40 years since the change over. Like many Canadian badge collectors, I pay little attention to the enamel branch badges, and usually throw them in the traders box. Today, while sorting badges, I found these two Administration Branch badges. When I had a close look at them, they were completely different.
The enamel Branch badges are largely ignored by collectors, but are we in the same state as Brits were with the AA badges? Maybe now is the time to document the patterns and varieties of enamel badges? With the change to Royal Canadian Air Force and the Royal Canadian Navy, will many of these Branch badges be changed? (Sorry about the dark image... Batman was playing with the camera.)

Many moons ago, when a civviy could walk into the CANEX and purchase these badges, I did just that. My father was still serving and we were back in Canada so sometime between August 1980 and January 1982.
Maybe I should revisit these badges and figure out which ones I still need.

CME Badges
The CF Enamel badges are an interesting group of insignia to collect. Over the last four decades some of the designs have changed and others have been discontinued. Like most items manufatured for the CF, they are not well documented and piecing together the story behind these badges would I think prove to be very rewarding.
Being an Engineer, there is no shortage of CME badges in the house and here are two examples that I have. ED |

I think the early Scully made badges were the nicest. I have badges marked Scully, EVCO, Breadner, Lamond & Fils.
Can anybody else think of other makers? Phil

As a collector of Engineer badges I have 3 Canadian Engr examples in enamel. The first is a Canadian Military Engineers-only in english, 45mm x 50mm made by W SCULLY.
The second is bilingual ENGINEERS . GENIE, 45mm x 50mm made by WILLIAM SCULLY. The third is again bilingual ENGINEERS . GENIE, 50mm X 55mm, so slightly bigger made by RIDEAU 1984. All the makers names are stampted on the slider. I also have the corresponding bullion badge for each.

Hi Larry, The site has an example of most the enamel badges, not much attention has been paid to the varieties. With nearly 40 years of issues, and the many different variations on these, it is time to document them.
Hi Jerry, The English language Engineers badge was an early Branch issue, which was not an authorized badge. The English only pattern are very scarce.

The variations would be interesting to track. The SIGNALS badge must have at least 6 major variations (not counting slight differences in hue)

Just received a CFP267 manual issued by the Dept of National Defense off of Ebay.... printed in 1976 it gives a wealth of information pertaining to CF badges... not only regiment or core badges but Base badges, Station badges,Ships, Flying squadrons, reserve forces, etc.
In my opinion a great pickup for reference on getting into enamelled badges. |

Good-Day Phil. There seems to be an error in the references!!! SIGNALS is (of course) the correct identity of the badge!!

As a former Radar Technician who wore the C & E badge with an Air Force uniform, I don't want anybody to think that this badge is the sole property of army people who went into recruiting and tested postive for Rad Op (and the deservedly lower pay that went with it). Phil
