Default RASC SAS photo

Hi folks

Just borrowed this image from a Manchester FB page, the owners family always thought he was RAF, clearly looks like an RASC cap badge and SAS qualification wings.

Is there anything else eagle eyed forum members might be able to help with?

Might it be post war? I'm guessing the beret might be maroon, what about his medals?

Anything info might be useful to pass on to the family, I'm not sure of his name yet.
Cheers
Sean

Sean, It looks like there was a formation patch on his left arm, you can just make out the outline where it was, Maybe removed when qualified for SAS??
No rank noted either.

Definitely post was judging by the ribbons. I would agre that it's likely to be a maroon beret.

He has a least one gallantry medal and I think I can see a rosette on what is the second indicating a bar to it, followed by the 1939 Star and Africa Star.
On the lower row he has the Italy Star, France & Germany Star, Defence Medal and War Medal.

Should be easier to trace.

regards

To be wearing wings on his chest as opposed to his arm he would have had to be awarded them during WW2 which would indicate WW2 service with the Regiment. So far I have not been able to come up with a gallentry award to anyone of that name who was a member of the SAS during WW2.
The maroon beret doen't really help much as 2 SAS always wore it and eventually all members of 1 SAS did with a few notable exceptions Paddy Mayne being the main one.
There is a list of approx 8 men who were entitled to wear SAS wings on their chest post WW2 but he doesn't appear on this. Although a number of WW2 members did although they were quickly told to move them by the various RSM's of the Regiments they went to after the SAS was disbanded in October/ November 1945.

This is also an RASC soldier wearing SAS insignia including the scarce 1943 Special Raiding squadron brass sand cast badge , the SAS wings worn as non-operational wings on right arm.
