Default R.E. title

Hi All,
Here is a strange R.E. shoulder title, quite thick approx. 2-3mm.
Can anyone date it?
Thanks, John

That's a good suggestion, Sapper.
Here is a Boer War period title that has similar thickness and lugs.

It would be very nice if it was, I have never had any Boer War titles or slouch hat badges but the pointiness of the "E" reminds me of the badges forum members have shown previously.
Regards and Happy Christmas
