Union Flags
Here is a selection of Union Flags all of which have been obtained in mixed lots of cloth British Army badges. Subdued types for temperate dpm, desert dpm and the new Multi Terrain Pattern - Some with velcro backing and some are no doubt spurious.
those with a white border are generally of the Scout type and I understand were the first to be brought into use when the British Army needed to show a UK identifier usually when in United Nations deployments. Tim

Thanks for the many replies fellas.
I am enquiring about these particular UJ patches. They are being spruiked on ebay as being specifically UKSF patches. SAS ISSUE IR UNION JACK FLAG VELCRO PATCH GENTEX PARACLETE RARE Please see following; http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/220930281...84.m1439.l2649 http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SAS-ISSUE...item2a18fdb585 Any opinions as to the authenticity of this? |

Partially true
Morning Airtrooper
My lad was out there with SFSG in 2008 At that time these patches were done in brown or tan and could be freely purchased in stores/tailors by any serving ranks/units. Last night on Channel 5 there was a programme about Lima Company RM and they were wearing these sort of patches - on rig & paraclete, possibly one on a helmet also. Generally it wasn't common to put them on helmets when he was there. Not sure if they were brown, tan or grey/black. He says the Ebay one on the helmet doesn't look IR - but cloth. The sold one is IR (you can see flash off the IR reflective material). The weapon & kit with, and on, the helmet and the type of helmet are consistent with UK SF & UK SFSG. His opinion is that these patches may be issued but are also likely to be available to purchase as mentioned earlier in the thread. Hope this helps Yours Aye Ray |

Thanks Ray, very helpful.
So, I can conclude that any of the 3 IR badges in my original post may have been issued or worn by UKSF. |

The JACIG one is the earlier pattern - with the crest and flag embroidered directly into the brassard. They were very hard to keep hold of as the QM used to claim them back. I asked to keep mine and was told very directly to give it back! One of the unit WOs gave me one as a memento - along with the embroidered patch and a pair of his BRIXMIS badges - went I moved to another posting. There was another pattern with the crest, like a flight suit badge, stitched onto the brassard.

The last 2 are definately not issue badges but an example of commercial inventiveness.

I wore small coloured Union Jacks in the early 70's when with AMF(L) sown directly on to our DPM Combat Jackets, and Canadian Parkers we wore in Norway.
I have a Sealed Patten Card dated 1966 with NSN NIV (Not in vocabulary) marked for AMF(L) use. Union Jack Patch with Enamaled Fob Badge and later Formation Patch |

Above AMF patches were also worn by 2 Flt, AAC based at Netheravon.

JACIG Inspector's wolly pully with para wings, I'm guessing late 1990s from the contract number on the wooly pully and merrowed JACIG badge, but clearly wasn't worn much.
Happy to part with it at a sensible price if anyone's interested, otherwise it will probably go on eBay... |

All MTP Combat Shirts & Jackets now come with Union Jack attached so no need to buy them!
I have a Standard Patton for a Union Jack Patch marked NIV dating from 1962 for use by Ace Mobile Force of which I was part in mid 1970's and had to stitch our own UJ on Combat Jackets but also were issued with Green Brassards with flag already attached. |
