I think that on his hat he is wearing the early pattern 6 Cdo slip-on title - white on black VI over COMMANDO. This is illustrated being worn at Buckingham Palace by a member of 101 Tp, 6 Cdo - see page 81 "British Army Uniforms & Insignia of World War 2" by Brian Davis. Also page 54 of "Allied Special Forces Insignia 1939-1948" by Peter Taylor. The second reference shows another shot of the same US Ranger (?) badged 6 Cdo. Mike

I would guess that the unfortunate Ranger (?) who lost his left leg was given an assortment of insignia by his British brothers in arms as a memento of his time attached to 6 Cdo. They probably felt that it was the least they could do under the circumstances. It's not much consolation, but at least he survived the War. Mike

Default No 1 Commando insignia

Hello I am keen to catalogue my fathers wast time buttons etc.
Any clues on how to do this?
