Fantastic how the white spatterdashes mirror in the wet pavement.

Was the pavement watered for the effect by the photographer or was it an unintended extra after a rain shower?

Now they look like a proper Highland battalion should. The photos will not show minor splattering and scuffs on spats. When I was in a pipe band back in the 70s (Caledonian Pipe Band of Buffalo NY; no less than five members had served in the Black Watch) we always had to whiten our spats after almost every parade, particularly when it rained. We used liquid white shoe polish as blanco was of course unavailable.

Interesting [to me] that the conventional rank-observant distribution in the group is not observed. Neither is it sized for height.
Indeed I cannot see any systematic arrangement.
Any ideas?

It seems to have the more or less usual arrangement if rank to me, with the officer seated in the middle.
