The image you attached shows 28 Commonwealth Brigade. The "Yellow 9s" is the sign of 27 Inf Bde (3 x 9 = 27!)

I've never given it any thought, but I imagine someone in the selection/design process simply coloured the word COMMONWEALTH in yellow (gold) to replicate that on the first pattern 1 Commonwealth Division sign. Notwithstanding the multinational nature of these formations I doubt very much if all the national authorities were formally consulted over variations in the design - it was probably a decision taken within the Div HQ.

Default 28 Commonwealth Bde

FYI

09.10.68. At the 188th Meeting of the Army Dress Committee a further consolidated list of formation Signs was submitted for consideration of approval included this Bde: a St. Edward’s crown in gold with a scarlet cushion on a white background above a scroll in white bearing the word ‘COMMONWEALTH’ in scarlet, on a background 3” deep 2 3/5” wide the upper half coloured light blue and the lower half dark blue.

01.11.71. ANZUK became effective. On this date a five nation agreement became effective assuring the security of Singapore/Malaysia. It replaced the AMDA agreement under which Commonwealth Forces were stationed in both Singapore and Malaysia. With the resulting change in responsibilities, and the change of status to forces based in Singapore, there was a perceived need to change insignia.

11.11.71. ANZUK FORCE HQ sent a telex to inform home commands that they had approved a new design of 28 ANZUK BRIGADE shoulder title. It was identical to the then current Commonwealth flash except that the title ANZUK had replaced COMMONWEALTH. In addition figures ‘28’ appeared in a separate white box beneath the crown.
= = =

It would appear that the Commonwealth FS was short-lived.

Mike,

But there was a big difference s between the two patches that with different "Commonwealth" colours.Especially the design inside the crown.
