Air Cadets?
Hi all,
I have this picture of my late uncle Charles Gordon Moss (on the right), REME (who died as a POW of the Japanese in 1945) with another uncle, Wallace Moss (at left of photo) before Gordon sailed for Singapore. Wallace was in the RAF following this but I think in this picture he is a cadet - air cadets? I think Gordon would have been RAOC in this picture as REME not formed until 1942. Any assistance appreciated. Thanks in advance, Dean. |

Dean, the patch on the left hand sleeve looks like it's a sort of oval. The Air Defence Cadet Corps (ADCC), the forerunner of the Air Training Corps (ATC), wore a similar shaped patch, although so did the ATC, so he could have been an air cadet. I can't remember when each organization was founded. At the beginning of WW2 it was the ADCC, but in about 1940/41 it became the ATC. David

Air Cadet
The young man is dressed in the uniform of the ADCC. Although the ovals were also worn by the ATC they were the same colour as the uniform. The oval shown in your picture is the light blue of the ADCC. The clincher is also the belt and the epaulettes, a large silver locket type, which was not worn by the ATC (theirs being of uniform cloth and silver coloured two prong buckle) and the ATC tunic did not have epaulettes.

Yes, the lad on the left is Air Defence Cadet Corps. ATC formed February 1941, although there was a changeover period of several months before all ADCC uniforms had been swapped.

REME
Dean, REME was not formed until October 1942, by this time your late uncle Charles Gordon Moss would have been a POW for a while as Singapore surrendered on 15 February 1942.
I think REME personnel were formed from RAOC and RASC. |

Hi and thanks to all for expert ID's on ADCC- I am very grateful.
I will look for some correspondance of my uncle Gordon's to determine if RASC or RAOC as indeed has REME on gravestone but yes he sailed to be captured before their stores were unloaded. Cheers Dean. |
