Hiall

I did a search on the Middlesex Works cap badge, to see if they were being sold.

Being as I thought a rare cap badge, I was surprised to to find there were
six dealers selling them on ebay, and the prices they were asking

There are currently no genuine Middlesex PWPB cap badges on eBay.

All overpriced fakes. The most expensive I can see is £199.99.

You will have done will if you obtain a genuine example for the former price, genuine other ranks command a fee circa £350 from the more reliable dealers.

Hi Luke

I thought the same with them being fakes, mind you the dealers did say, they thought they were genuine, but check the photos.

The £199 one, has the Firmin London stamp on, it also has a SIVER stamp.

Better photos, a clean up of over 40 years of gunge, and a better phone camera.

I’m surprised it has been 40 years since that cohort of repros was made.

Gerwyn,

If you take the time to search the numerous threads on those 3 particular badges on here on which many knowledgable members have contributed, particularly the issues concerning fakes then you will see what is bad about your badges.

regards

Hello dubaiguy. A better of the Middlesex Works badge. Gerwyn,

Hi,

as indicated, lots of good reading here on Pals fakes and what to look out for, but to start you off, the easiest way (but not the only way) to pick a Birmingham Pals fake is the neck. Note the 3 'jewels', these are missing on fakes, ie, 99.9% of eBay offerings. It's a good initial cull, and will vastly reduce the ones worth looking at.

Regards, Tim

Hello Tim, Thank you for your help, there are no jewels on mine like you say, but looking at your photo of the genuine one, mine has a lot better patina, and quality. Gerwyn.

Added, I can just make out of what's left of the goats coat using a magnifying glass, which going by the chain the badge has been highly polished.

yep, sadly, many fakes are so old now, they develop (or are helped along by the fakers) a nice patina. Quality is also no guarantee, as, for instance, you'll note for the Welsh 11th Bttn collars, the fakes are a much superior strike of badge than the real ones. While you can generalise the Victorian period badges were crafted to a very high standard, the same cannot be said about some WW1 badges.

Such a minefield, but as with anything, knowledge is king, and there are plenty of posts and people here who have vast knowledge, which has helped me immeasurably in weeding out bad ones; a problem I would guess 100% of members have had at some stage or another.

Cheers, Tim

Feel free to have a look at my album (and do a 'pals' search for another albums by other members) to get an idea of bona fide badges.

Cheers, Tim
