Rob

Apart from looking at the back, which we all prefer to do, there are a few things on the front of the RND badges which I look for. I have attached 2 pics below, the one with the red background is what I believe to be a genuine Anson badge and the one on the blue I believe to be a common fake. I have put black doodles around the main areas I look for. On the genuine badges the ANSON lettering tends to be fatter than on the fakes, this is more evident in the Ns. On the genuine badges the curves at the end of the Nil Desperandum scroll tend to be tighter than the more sweeping curves seen on the fakes. The ribbed band on the coronet just above the row of jewels tends to be more finely detailed on the genuine badges and a bit chunkier on the fakes. On the genuine badges the outer edges of the coronet tend to finish in larger "beads" than the fakes. Not marked on the pics but the band along the top edge of the coronet always seems to be broader than on the fakes. From what I can see your badge has all the good points and added to this you have the strengthening rod on the back (although this can be easily faked) and a less than tidy Gaunt plaque. I would class your badge as genuine but as usual all the above is just my opinion.

Paddy

Well, I'm glad I opened this one. Learnt a lot from the members as always. I have requested pictures of the three I have stumbled on over here in the states. I'll let you know what they look like. All three for $220, about 140 pound.

Thanks again team.

Regards to all

Simon.

Here is my Anson hat badge for comparison, some slight differences in construction.
Cheers, Tinto

I'm looking at getting the Howe, Hood and Drake pieces. Hopefully they work out as legit; fingers crossed.

Thanks chaps, I've had mine about 26 years, there must have been fewer fakes around then but you can't take anything for grantedRob.

Default Hood Bn RND Collar Size Badges

Hello All

I have attached a few pictures below of a pair of Hood Bn RND badges that I've obtained over the last 2 years or so. They were not purchased at the same time and one came from the UK while the other came from America. They both came in small collections of badges that were a mix of genuine and some copies. Both badges are cast and look like they have been made by the same manufacturer, even down to the appearance of a possible Gaunt Tablet sized feature on the rear as if the mould for the casting was taken from a genuine Gaunt collar badge. I have added a picture of one of the badges beside a cap size badge to show the size difference. Are these out and out poor copies or is there a chance that they could be theatre made badges (would the Hood Bn have been in such an area?). The only real difference I can see between the 2 badges is the variation of the lugs. Opinions welcomed and much appreciated.

Paddy

Hi Paddy,
An interesting pair. I can't answer your questions but would like to think they are genuine. I have a couple of die struck collar size Hood badges but they have sliders and may well be fakes.
Cheers, Tinto

Tinto

It would be nice if they were genuine but hopefully someone can shed some light on them. I've got one of the Hood collar size badges with a slider too, nice well made badge and they have been the subject of some debate on here (as well as a slidered collar size Nelson) as they appear in a reference book.

Hi BC
I couldn't say for sure, but I don't like the positioning of the Gaunt plaque. Looks dodgy to me.
Cheers,
Alex

I also have one that is almost identical. Height 32.3mm and scroll width 26.7mm

Provenance good, and I am very happy with mine as well. Unfortunately I can't post a picture at the moment, but PM me if you need a comparison.

Cheers, Neil
