Thanks for the link. Nice article, but I can not take it serious about the correct designations of the regiment. It only uses " Artists Rifles " as the general name.
From several sources: Raised in 1860 as: 38th Middlesex Rifle Volunteer Corps. In 1877: 38th Middlesex (Artists) RVC. The 1880 renumbering made it: 20th Middlesex (Artists) RVC Into the Territorial Force as: 28th (County of London) Battalion, The London Regiment (Artists Rifles) (TF) etc. etc. Present: 21st Special Air Service Regiment (Artists) (R) The official designation never was " Artists " or " Artists Rifles ". They were only secondary titles (but of course used by everybody, the regiment itself in the first place, as the name). Ray Westlake in Tracing the Rifle Volunteers uses " Artists ". Regiment.org uses " Artists " as well as " Artists' ". I would really like to know what is correct for what period in history.

Hi Leigh
Many, many thanks! I was given his trio (now in safe keeping) and Princess Mary tin, which Aunt Rosemary had claimed back from the Artist's museum. In the tin is a letter that she wrote to me at the time, telling me how the museum had been a little reluctant to return the group... I know that it is very hit and miss but are there any soldier's papers likely to be around? Also, is there a mention of an SWB issue (there wasn't one with the grouping but I wondered if he had qualified for one, being struck on the head)? Cheers |
