Default Cast Border Regiment badge

A recent aquisition, an Indian sandcast Border Regiment cap badge made in 1942 when both the 2nd and 9th Battalions were there.
New to me is the red badge outline backing, was this particular to one of these two battalions?
Odd that makers went through all the trouble of providing a felt retaining clip but with no felt behind it. The clip now only obscures the felt backing so the voids between the dragon are now just dark holes.
The maker mark reads J.P.1942, an unknown maker to me. Could it be the known maker mark U.P.1942 with a defective maker stamp? If so, does U.P. stand for United Provinces?

Rgds, Thomas.

Default JP/UP

Yes U.P. stood for United Provinces as you said, this could have been a poor stamping from a damaged die, quality was never paramount in the sub continent.

Like the badge, I know sandcasts can be tough to collect but I have a real interest in these types of badges.

best

Hello,

I think there is a thread on here somewhere regarding the UP JP discussion.

I have A number of West Yorkshire Regiment and York & Lancaster Regiment badges marked JP and definitely not UP, so it would appear that either UP used a dodgy stamp on a number of different badges or that JP is a different manufacturer.

I don't have a single badge marked UP and I do have quite a lot of Indian made badges due to my West Yorks/Y&L interests.

The JP marked badges are not of particularly good quality, the K.O.R cast badges being of much better quality.

I'm open to suggestions on the UP/JP thing as I really don't know the answer but would like to.

Regards,

M

Marcus would you be willing to post images of your maker marks?

United Provinces was a state in British India so it seems unlikely to have been used as an individual maker's mark. JP whoever they were seems more likely.

The J.P.1942 mark seems fairly crisp to me to be a 'dodgy stamp' at least on the tail of the J !

Marcus I look forward to your images!

Mike the tail of the J seems a bit too far upturned for an average J. Also the maker mark U.P.1942 is a known maker mark, at least I have it in my list of maker marks so I must have encountered it somewhere. Unfortunately I didn't save the image. The J.P.1942 mark however is new to me.

Any comments on the backing?

Rgds, Thomas.

Default CAST CAP BADGES

Thomas,

Firstly my apologies for having taken so long to add this post to your thread.

Please find attached pictures of the makers marked cast badges to the British (as opposed to the British Indian Army) I can currently lay my hands on.

I'm 100% sure its JP as in a makers initials and not UP as in United Provinces when it comes to your badge.

You will see from one of my badges in the next post UP does come into play at the end of a makers name.

Kind Regards,

M

Interesting Hammo, I just picked up a Rifle Brigade cap badge from the same manufacturer.
I could not find any online reference to their presence in India around that time though?

Thanks Marcus and Luc for showing yours, all with the same "J", it now seems unlikely to me that the "J" is a damaged "U".

Marcus, your York and Lancaster and West Yorkshire badges are by the same maker, G.Karanjeer & Sons Aligarh U.P., but with different markings.

Rgds, Thomas.

Luc,

You are quite correct which would lead me to come to the deduction (contary to what I previosly thought) that this maker is middle eastern and not Indian. The Rifle Brigade having being quite well represents in Middle Eastern theatre of operations.

Kind Regards,
M
