Can you help with these buttons please

Sorry this maybe a very long post.

So I’m trying to help my 82 year old father sort and present his massive button collection most of which have just been kept in a cigar boxes and not seen the light of day some of which he said he doesn’t need anymore at his age and others he wants to be presented. so i thought it would be a nice thing to do for him. However, I’ve released my knowledge in the field is some what lacking and I fear i have taken on far more than I can chew!

Speaking with my father about it is also very confusing.

So please if you can help i would be most grateful.

My questions are can you help in dating these and also what are the different buttons for as they are made from different things are they mess waiter uniform buttons.

I think i need to buy a reference book any recommendation for a book for a beginner to have?

1 thats looks very polished warn made by firmin & sons Ld London
1 i think is brass again the detailing isn’t great so wondered if polished warn or could it be a fake? (Do you get fake button? Sorry if thats a silly question). again made by Pitt & co 31 Maddox st London.W.


Then there is a small think its silver and gold? 16mm made by Firmin & sons London, pretty much the same question for this button

Then there are 2 flat KC 57th Middlesex Foot regiment made by Jennens & sons London.

Then there is 31st? Regiment of foot? I stumped on this made by Jennens & co London are you able to tell me anything about this button?

And lastly the skull and crossbones button which my father said is the 17th Lancer making it pre 1922 but i think its the 17th/21st Lancers making it post 1922 would you be able to help.
