Default Early Battlefield Collection of Badges - Photograph

Hi all,

When in London week before last I picked up a small bundle of badge and headdress photographs and am just sorting through them.

This is the first which is a collection of battlefield relics that comprise a number of shako plates, glengarry badges and buttons. They are as I can make out for the 74th Foot HLI, 59th Foot East Lancashire, 88th Connaught Rangers, 89th Foot Royal Irish, and 36th Worcestershire. The Light Company of the 1st Foot ? The bottom right badge is Royal Welsh Fusiliers. These look to be Regency period OR's Shako plates 1816-1829 as per K&K 26-32 but I have seen Crimean period plates of a similar appearance. The bottom badge is a 92nd Foot Gordon Highlanders sporran badge.

There are a number I cannot identify. One of the buttons has a 92 for Gordon Highlanders and is as per 182 in Ripley's 'Buttons of the British Army 1855-1970' with dates of 1855-1881.

The back of the photograph has 'Please Keep' written on it. Uploading from my Mac downloads I have been unable to control the image orientation sorry.

So as ever I turn to the experience of members of the Forum to assist, cheers Dean.

Smile Helmet plates

The helmet plate in the third photograph seems to have the generic musicians insignia in the middle.

Probably a band badge.

Rob

Yes indeed Rob - have been flicking through K&K for clues.

Nice reconstruction Griff. Would have been quite a badge, cheers Dean.

Hi Dean
Very nice and interesting photo :
The circular headdress badges numbered, 1, 36, 59, & 88 are all ORs badges c.1839 to 1855 worn first on the Bell-Top shako, then (from 1845 onwards) on the Albert Shako.
The remnant with 74 and 89 thereon are ORs shako plates 1829 to 1839 as worn on the Bell Top shako. The badge with the Royal Arms thereon is the remains of a large grenade as worn by ORs on the Regency Shako c.1816 - 1829 (21st Foot). The badge with RWF on a scroll is an ORs Regency shako badge for the 23rd Foot. The Musician's badge is dated as 1845 to 1855 (Albert Shako) Regards Jeff
