Very Strange Indeed - Hertfordshire badge (any ideas?)
Hi Guys,
I was looking thru a sellers feedback items to check out how 'honest' has been and I found this little oddity. A pre 19 badge of the Beds but with a scroll reading 'Hertfordshire' I suppose there are a couple questions really that could be asked: 1) Is it a 'genuine' item? (N.B it has no braze holes and the slider isn't that great, so I'd say it's probably not WW1 vintage) 2) Why was it made? (over zealous restrike/privately produced - for a snipe at the Beds for not including Herts in the title despite large nos of men from the county serving in that Regiment?) A snip for £8 (which it sold for) even just for a muse I think you'll agree. Any ideas anyone? Cheers, Luke Last edited by Luke H; 15-02-08 at 06:39 PM. Reason: I can't spell |

Luke,
It is difficult to tell how well stamped the back is and whether it is genuine or a fantasy piece. All I can think of is a School OTC or CCF? I have never seen one before. I don't think that it is Canadian but I leave that to our Canadian experts to confirm this. Alan |

Cheers Alan, was worried this thread was going to die a quick death.
Its certainly an interesting badge any rate. Hopefully our Canadian cousins can confirm or not if its anything to do with their mob. I'll have a bit of a look see online into the possibility of OTC formation. Ta Luke |

Definitely not a Canadian badge. I know of no places named Hertford in Canada and the only Bedford is a small village on the Quebec side of the border with Vermont. Most Canadian militia infantry regiments were named for the counties in which they were located. The city units had grander names

Luke ,
Glad to be able to help ! If you have a list of some of the badges that you are after, it may pay to PM it to me, so I can keep a look-out here in NZ, where the prices can be more reasonable, generally. Cheers ! Steve |
