Default 6th (United Kingdom) Division 2019

The Division has been re-formed in August 2019.

Force Troops Command was renamed as 6th (United Kingdom) Division on 1 August 2019, with sub-units consisting of 1st Signal Brigade, 11th Signal Brigade, 1st Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance Brigade, 77th Brigade and the Specialised Infantry Group. It will sit alongside restructured 1st UK Division and 3rd UK Division under the Field Army.

6 Division has a long history stretching back to the Peninsular War but was more recently active from 2008 to 2011 with a clear focus on preparing brigades for Afghanistan and with its divisional HQ based at Imphal Barracks, Fulford, York. During summer 2009, the divisional HQ was significantly reinforced and transformed into Combined Joint Task Force 6 before deploying to Afghanistan as Regional Command South in November 2009. The divisional headquarters closed in April 2011.

Tim,

Interesting. I take it that the sign shown is the new 6 Div sign?

Well, I'm really blown away by that design. Clearly many hours have been spent thinking that one up.

From the Army website

6th (United Kingdom) Division (6 (UK) Div). The re-designation of Force Troops Command (FTC) to 6th (United Kingdom) Division (6 (UK) Div) will provide the Army’s asymmetric edge, orchestrating Intelligence, Counter-Intelligence, Information Operations, Electronic Warfare, Cyber and unconventional warfare. 6 (UK) Div will include: 1st Signal Brigade, 11th Signal Brigade, 1st Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance Brigade, 77th Brigade and the Specialist Infantry Group.

There will be no changes to personnel numbers, resourcing, cap badges or locations.
1st August marked the rebirth of a Division which served throughout the First World War and during the Second War. More recently, 6 (UK) Div was formed between 2008-2011 and deployed to Afghanistan as Headquarters Regional Command (South).

Attached is a cutting from the local newspaper.

A quick check shows that the - frankly, dull - formation sign was used by the Division in the First World War. A similar sign was used during and after World War Two by 29th Brigade.

American 1 Corps formation sign is similar but on a circular rather than square black backing.
What inspired the WWI 6 Div use of the sign?
The 29 Infantry Bde usage is alleged to represent an initial of one of its commanders.

In his book Divisional and Other Signs published in 1920 Capt V Wheeler-Holohan notes under the sign's description "It would appear that there is no particular history attached to it".
