Default Trade badge SLO (searchlight operator)

As I understand it this badge is Searchlight Operator, and from a couple of other threads it suggests they were initially RE then taken over early 40's by RA AA units.

From when until when was this badge worn

Does the lettering style help date which came first?

Thanks, Charlie

Charlie,

SLO is a WW2 unofficial badge worn at first by RE and then by RA also.

There are a number of varieties all down to the manufacturer.

Take a look at mine.

I hope it is, that would be an unrecorded badge, but I'm not sure.

On BD and probably pre-September 1940 as there is no arm of service strip. I'll dig out the full photo to check.

Default SLO

Jon,
I've just made contact with a big ATS collector and he says the girls wore this badge on the lower left arm.

Just picked up on this, I have a few SLO trade badges in my collection. I have had a look at grey_green_acorn collection and he shows it with other "SLO" badges but now comparing it to the "MT" badge it does look more like a "T" and not a L .
But what trade would "STO" be??
I have had a look through my Edwards & Langley but found nothing remotely close to it.
So it looks more lightly that it is a "stylised" letter L but.......

It does seem odd that this unofficial and unauthorised badge seems to have been so widely worn and produced in so many different styles? I havecthe SLO and the LSO variations. I've now seen pictures of them being worn on the upper right arm, does that mean 'Instructor', and the lower left arm, does that mean 'Trained Operator'?

Only if it was above or on Chevrons.
