R. Regt of Gloucestershire & Hampshire button
Would a button to the above regiment whose amalgation never took place be a scarcity or a curiosity?

A curiosity and probably not scarce. A battalion, plus soldiers extra-regimentally employed, would consist of at least 650 men. Each soldier had two sets of No2 Dress which needed 8 buttons per jacket. A calculation is 650 x 16 = 10,400 buttons, so with spares in the system and in the QM stores, the initial production contract was likely to be for at least 12,000 buttons. Large size buttons for officers Service Dress and greatcoats would have been made in smaller numbers as would small cap size buttons.
As the amalgamation was cancelled the buttons were presumably never issued at the time. However, they may have been retained 'in the system' for some time, just in case, until being eventually disposed of, some by sale and some destroyed. Tim

An image of RRGH insignia. Note missing items "sample with Gaunt's" and the use of the Gordon Highlanders type Tiger (Churchill 1707) as the intended collar badge.

Not sure on RRGH officers collar badges. Presumably there is a card showing officer badges somewhere?
