RND officers Insignia Collection & OSD's
Hello,
Some of you may have seen this Lot of badges for sale in a recent auction and may have indeed bid on them, but I am glad to say they arrived with me today. They didnt sneak under the radar and brought a good price. Having sorted through them I think I have the badges of at least two brothers who served in WW1. The first was a RNVR Officer who in 1915 transferred to the Hawke Battalion, Royal Naval Division and served as a Captain. His badges are in the first two photos. His original RNVR bullion cap badge, very pristine condition. A nice pair of Bronze RND cap badges, a small one with one blade and a large one with 2 blades. Two pairs of facing collar badges to the Hawke Bn, all maker marked x J.R. Gaunt. Two sets of RNV Bronzed uniform buttons, 4 large & 6 small along with 2 sets of small bronze pips and a set of bronze greatcoat pips. In the mix is a pristine OSD collar badge of the Nelson Bn, again JR Gaunt maker marked, probably not worn by him. The second two photographs are a superb set of OSD cap badges and a few collars. There is a nice J&Co Middlesex Regt cap badge with 2 matching pairs of OSD collars all made by JR Gaunt. Because of these and the fact there is a lot of Officers buttons also to the Middlesex Regiment leads me to think the second brother was in the Middlesex Regiment. The other badges are superb examples of OSD badges mostly maker marked by JR Gaunt and all in virtually un used condition, probably gifted to one of the brothers in WW1. So please enjoy the collection. I am keeping some bits but I will be moving most of it on. regards

Excellent stuff Simon.
Two fabulous sets of insignia. What indication have you that points to them being brothers, or was information included in the lot description? Regards. Brian |

Brian,
No nothing, its just typical of a small family collection thats been hidden since the end of WW1. May even be the same man who served in the RNVR, then the RND and after the war as a Territorial in his local TA Battalion in Middlesex. I just feel there is some connection. regards

Simon.
Understood; sometimes the gut feeling does uncover some fascinating history and facts. I do hope you discover if they are related or the one bloke. Regards. Brian |

What a magnificent selection of related badges Simon. Pristine condition OSD badges as you say and nicely makers marked. Rare to see such quality across a number of regiments in a single offering. Many thanks for sharing, cheers Dean.

Thanks Dean,
I find the KOYLI set interesting in that both left facing badges have blades and the right, a true collar, has loops. It would appear that the wearer has used a bladed cap badge as his left collar, maybe standard practice, I dont know. regards

RND officers Insignia Collection & OSD's
Thank you for sharing this superb collection of badges, apart from the RND badges there is OSD insignia for eleven different Regiments, the Middlesex Regiment being predominant, which makes me think one of the previous owners was a badge collector, albeit OSD'S.
Great stuff! Rob |

Yes perhaps a brother did collect a few OSD badges to other regiments Rob. In a tin with my DLI grandads couple of DLI badges were a few badges to other regiments to which he was not associated. I am sure this is a fairly common occurrence where they picked up or were given a few badges for often sentimental or other reasons.
The KOYLI collars intrigued me too Simon as to why one collar badge was bladed and maybe al they had, cheers Dean
