3 classic cap,. I used to have a SD cap for the scots greys with the distinctive black piping in the crown to commemorate the Tsar, an interesting aspect I did not know about until I bought the cap.

Couldn't have happened at a worse time for Russia. Did you know that the German Crown Prince, Wilhelm, was Colonel of the 11th Hussars for only three years, 1911-1914? |

Nice caps, are the badges original to them or replacements for missing ones?

Indeed, Wilhelm was removed at the start of the great war. I have an 11th Hussars cap in my collection, very striking looking I think.

Ta, I'm just wondering about the RSDG (and RSG?) badges being worn with the wreath and detail on the eagles breast worn down, between which dates that would have been the practise.
3dg may chip in with more detail. |

Hi
Nice caps indeed. As Leigh says,WO's and OR's on the beret wore a bi metal cap badge, buffed down, and cleaned to death on a black oblong backing, Staff Sgt and below on the SD cap an Anodised one on an oblong black backing. WO's on SD cap as per beret badge. Officers on the beret, a silver and gilt badge, again, buffed down and cleaned to death, but on a cut to shape around the cap badge black backing, SD caps as per beret. An old sweat gone through the ranks Officer normally retained their original cap badge. Hope this helps, attached is my old beret badge, filthy! I'd be up on a charge for it ha ha, and my SD cap anodised one. Cheers Chris Last edited by 3dg; 26-05-21 at 09:12 AM. |

Thanks for that info, it's the sort of information that doesn't seem to be common knowledge amongst those of us who didn't serve in the units concerned.
Some while back, on another forum a collector showed photos of a RSG Officer's Forage Cap which had been fitted with a worn, rubbed down badge when he'd acquired it, so he'd replaced it with a badge in better condition.......... Yes, I could see that the badges on your caps aren't worn down - apologies, I just didn't word my post very well.

RSG
So did ORs in the RSG have the black backing in their peaked caps or was it just officers only? I assume the tradition of "wear" on the badges was inherited from the 3rg DG? Did RSG do it too?
