The Queen's Own Mercian Yeomanry
I've just aquired these two badges. Both are maker marked J.R.Gaunt B'ham. However there is a slight variation in colour and the first example in the photo has a silver coloured coronet whereas the second one has a gold coloured coronet.

Don't quote me definitively on this... but the one without the gold colouring I think is later manufacture. The one I wore in 1979 has a gold coronet; I have a few more and there does not seem to be any rhyme or pattern to it, although one badge I bought recently has a darker gold finish - and none on the coronet.

Thats one of the peculiarities of anodised badges. The gold colour varies, whereas the silver is very uniform across all badges. In some cases the gold is that light it appears silver. The Devon Yeomanry Artillery is an example of this . Even the regiment believed it was silver .

Just to muddy the water a little further (through the prism of distant experience and the actual badge being in a drawer at my mother's house!) ....
My badge was the paler gold colour, with gold on the coronet...made by Gaunt. I would like a Firmin example, but the only one around at the moment is silly money for what it is. |

Unfortunately it got nicked in the post, but I briefly owned a small boxed set of 3 x CG & 3 x R Sigs gold anodised aluminium buttons.
They were a kit to show acceptable shades of gold on detailed buttons & on smooth surfaced buttons - the desired standard flanked by lighter gold but acceptable & deeper gold but acceptable. Would have been interesting to compare to items in hand. Got some poor quality photos of the kit but that's it. |
