Gun carriage being towed along behind an Army truck in a street parade, Brisbane, July 1942. Army truck is towing the gun carriage past All Hallows' School and St. Ann's Industrial School in Ann Street.

Yeah I can. It's near the CBD.

Brisbane was a big army town in 1942. I think more soldiers than civilians at the time.

My dad was a boy during that time (having arrived there in 1941 after being evacuated from Hong Kong).

I recall him telling me how there was a big US Army presence there.

Some fights with Aussie soldiers over local girls (Over-Paid, Over-Sexed and Over Here) occurred in Brisbane. The US Army was also segregated as well. The whites on the northside and blacks on the southside.

I had a close cousin who served in the Royal Navy during WW2, spent a lot of time based on Brisbane and after the war spent the rest of his life wishing he was back there, but never made it. A daughter of mine married a bloke from Bundaberg and lived in Brisbane for a few years before moving to Melbourne, so Brisbane must have something going for it. Mind you, when I lived in Perth, WA I did hear it described as 'The other friendly place'

Matador artillery tractor, 155mm M1917 or M1918 gun, probably belongs to a Heavy Battery (Coast), which were just being raised at this time in Brisbane and Townsville.

I used to live just a couple 100m away, looks almost as busy back in 1942 as today, only it's one way in the opposite direction now.
