Hi Rob
Thanks for the interesting "pics". The SBP looks fine to me. Typical of a multitude of Local Militia and Volunteers SBPs during the period 1793 to 1802 and a plethora of titles.
I feel sure this will be of great interest to our Irish experts on the forum and look forward to hearing more from them about this obscure regiment and its activities.
I understand Pettigo, being a "border town" had a traumatic time during the 1922 "troubles". Regards Jeff

Hi,
Pettigo was not a border town in 1796 as there was no border then.
I believe it was one of the local militias, raised by the rich land owners, to quell rebellions by the United Irishmen around that time.

Jeff,
the troubles in 1922 were, more or less, as a direct result of the introduction of the "new" border. That was when the Ulster Special Constabulary was raised, by the rich land owners, to quell rebellion by the Irish Volunteers.
Little changes here in a couple of hundred years.

Just to add a cautionary note on these plates,. 1796 was the year of the formation of The Loyal Orange Order and in 1896 to celebrate the 100 year anniversary the LOL commissioned many of these old cross belt plates to be redone in their own areas. So there is difficulty in authenticating them. They were made to the same pattern as the originals often on the same forge in the same village by the same family of blacksmiths............

One in the condition as you have is in my estimation in the lower price bracket.

Regards,

Dave
