Default Imperial Yeomanry FFS Cap POWs.....

This is Sergeant 21421 Thomas Blakeley Rix, 7th (1st PAOLYC) Coy., 4th Btn. I.Y.

Back in the UK just after his stint in the Boer War, he is holding his FFS cap and in it is a large POWs Feathers Cap badge...... it does not appear to be bi-metal. Its either a clean brass metal or white metal (most likley WM)? His buttons are large QVC GS pattern probably white metal (pewter).

Griff,

Cracking shot, especially with that view of the FFS cap and badge. I presume you cropped this from a larger image?

Thanks for posting.

Peter.

Thanks Gents

The provenance for the photo is spot on as it comes directly from the Great Grandson of Sgt. Rix

The QVC GS Button is the large type..... and again.... white metal.... probably pewter (see below). I have the image in a very hi resolution..... so I am 99% sure that its not brass. The cap badge is certainly white metal. No shoulder titles though.... so probaby this is his "best/spare" set of FS uniform?

As ever, plenty of varients.... the one I have just purchased is definatley circa 1900.... so I am happy its IY. I am sure the above Regiment would have worn the same varient around that time as well

Sgt Rix's cousin, 21427 Tpr. Thomas William Womack of the 7th (1st PAOLYC) Coy, 4th Bn. I.Y....... just before going out to South Africa Nothing "fancy" about a Leicestershire Imperial Yeomans kit...... just the practical basics to do the job.

I don't understand the QVC/ERVII reference , surely that's the Prince of Wales' coronet or am I missing something?

The "period" of use..... Looped Cap badges being more common..... below is a Welsh Regiment Cap badge with loops QVC/ERVII, the feathers are period to 1900. They are identicle to the E/W looped white metal shown alongside. Love to know if anyone has this "particular" POWs badge with a slider in bi-metal?

Default Something very similar

I'd missed that. For a long time I've had a "The Welsh" badge with loops exactly like the one you show except that it's in WM. It's a very strong badge, I can't bend it with my fingers and weighs 11grams. Any ideas?

Sounds like a "Volunteers" badge to me?

Below is the badge that I show at the begining of the thread.... just arrived today. You can see the 8mm long "O" loops clearly.

Here is the other, just received today. Different maker with 8mm N/S "O" loops and the badge is slightly bigger in length than the other.

I have an ancestor, (G G father) called "Thomas William Womack", and it's NOT a common name.

FreeBMD shows only 3 born in the entire country between 1840 and 1900.

So "21427 Tpr" may well be him. I would very much appreciate any historical/biographical detail you have on him, and his relationship to Sgt Rix.

My apologies for the lack of badge related content.
