Hi there, Depends on how old they are! below is a list that conforms to the Admiralty Manual of Seamanship 1937 and the Naval ratings Handbook (BR1938) for 1958 and 1965.

However I think some have changed and Physiotherapist I belive is now P and Mental nurse now M?

DSA is Dental Surgery Assistant and DH is Dental Hygienist

Hope this helps? I'm sure others on here can also enlighten you!

Best regards Tony

Hi, took a while to find it but HP stands for Heath Physicist! I think they do (or did) the radiological monitoring on nuclear submarines?

L Laboratry
O Operating Theatre
Letters under badges were normally Medical Technician branches not normal rating branches
M was an old masseur branch but believe later mental Nurse

M for the period 1911-49 was Masseur, later changed to Physiotheraphist, up to '65; then Medical Technician(Mental Nurse) from '65.

P denotes Mental Nurse '49-65, later called Medical Technician(Physiotheraphist) from '65
