Matti is a name I have been known by since I was born and is a diminuative of my uncommon surname. 467 are the last three of my army number.

Hi Everybody,
As you would probably guess Tinto is not my real name. It is a hill that dominates the landscape in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, where my ancestors lived.
I've been lucky in life, hence known to have a "tin bum" in New Zealand slang, or a "jammy b....." in British terms, so there is a connection there.
I thought that as there were so many other Johns on the Forum it would be best to go by a pseudonym but I'm easy.

Sadly there are people on here who hide behind aliases to hide a dodgy reputation.

From what I have seen, most people on the forum have a "handle", but still sign their posts with their christian name. It isn't something that I've really worried about, with the exception of a nuisance poster who, mercifully, is no longer welcome.

An interesting thread - I know of one regular on here who hides behind his alias because of his background as a known shyster when it comes to making fake badges and patches and due to a criminal conviction for medal fraud (and which was mentioned in a published journal).

Well, I have no problem with people knowing who I am. Once my website is up and running (replacing my adolescant rubbish which is still online, I knew no better, most of the badges on there are fake) it will be pretty obvious anyway - www.philipmcdowell.com kinda gives the game away. By the way once the new site is running, members will be more than welcome to correct my mistakes. Writing descriptions of all my badges is taking forever.

Andy in my limited experience of dealing with you on here and ebay, and knowing, roughly, your background you have always come across as a true gent.

Regards

Phil McDowell

I sometimes sign with my Christian name and have no objections to anyone knowing my Surname.

They're welcome to try and look me up in the phone book.

It's Thomas.

For those who wouldn't know there are quite a few of us in Wales.

Hence both in school and through my adult life my initials are used (1st three) rather than my name, but 41st is a reference to my area of interest.

Hwyl fawr,

Kevin

Gentlemen,

this is a thread I started when one of our members appeared to be acting underhand.. Nicknames etc are fine as far as I'm concerned, it's when someone pretends to be someone else in order to get up to no good which is IMO is out of order, which prompted me to start it!

David, is that sarcasm or just naivety on your part regarding Andy’s point?

Default Pseudonyms

Hi all, an interesting thread! Got to say that although I feel all the points raised here are valid, one point seems to have been missed! This is a MILITARY badge forum and many of the people on here have a military (or indeed Police) background, with some having served in the special forces, and there are SERVING members of the forces on here! some work within the security and counter terrorist world and therefore using their full real name would be an issue! Let me assure you it is a FACT that terrorist organisations and individuals DO use the internet for intelligence gathering! so maybe it is only right that some people should conceal their true identity.

I do aggree though that when people hide behind a pseudonym then attack other people it is cowardly and totally wrong!

regards Tony
