Hi Charles,
Are the fronds thistles or are they fern leaves?
The 11th NAMR badge has fern leaves.
Cheers, Tinto

Hi Tinto, they look like ferns. I think he boars head and ferns are a ittle different to the NAMR badges I have seen. I know there are Canadian Scottish units that the boars head for their unit symbols. Cheers,

Hi Charles,

A larger (detailed) photo of the front and back of the badge would be helpful.
Also some measurements could be useful.

The style of the cross and its positioning behind the badge suggests to me that there is a Scottish connection.

Interestingly the North Auckland Mounted Rifles had a Regimental alliance with the Royal Scots Greys, so I am of the opinion the badge in question is somehow connected by that alliance.

The 11th North Auckland Mounted Rifles was formed from the 3rd Battalion Auckland Mounted Rifles, however it appears that the band retained the title of “3rd Auckland Mounted Rifles Band” until after WW1.
(The 3rd Auckland Mounted Rifles Band was also known as the North Shore Mounted Rifles Band)

It is also worth considering that the only Scottish Mounted Rifle unit in New Zealand was the “Waipu Scottish Horse Mounted Rifle Volunteers” formed from members of the Waipu troop of the Marsden mounted rifles in February 1906. (Designated ‘G’ Squadron, No. 3 Regiment, AMR)

Brent

Did the Waipu Scottish Horse wear anything to sets themselves apart from the general MR?

The Waipu Scottish Horse had their own badge and did not use the 3rd Auckland badge that I am aware of.

The following link may be of interest, it is a break down of the Auckland Mounted Volunteer Companies prior to 1911.

Tinto, I am interested to know what other Auckland Mounted Volunteer badges you have in your collection????
It would be great to add a selection of badges to the above blog.

Hi Brent,
Many Thanks for the link. Your patient and meticulous research never fails to amaze me!
I do not have any other Auckland Mounted Volunteer badges (as far as I know). Here are the Waipu badges I have, the centre badge may have Australian associations. You are welcome to use the pictures if you like.
Cheers, Tinto

Thanks Tinto, I will certainly add the photo to the blog.

You might be interested to know that Pukman and I have been communicating on doing another badge project. I am not exactly sure which one we will do first, but hopefully all going well we will start it at the end of the school holidays.
As usual your help with this would be much appreciated.

Cheers
Brent
