Queensland Cameron Highlanders
Looking back through Bloomer & Bloomer's "Scottish Regimental Badges 1793-1971" (I know, not the ultimate compendium but still a decent overview) I was wondering why no mention whatsoever is made of the 61st Bn Queensland Cameron Highlanders. Being a definitely pre-1971 unit this struck me as quite odd. Any ideas / input??

Dean,
I think my friend Julian ( KLR) has put his finger on it when he says a lot of so called reference books are in fact catalogues of the authors collections. I know of a number of errors in Bloomers books, but you still have to credit the books, because if they had not been published, there would have been a gap in the available knowledge. I think that in the past there has been either a lack of knowledge of what information was available in various archives, or that authors have produced books based on their own ( limited ) researches, and I have been guilty of that.Trying to write a book in ones spare time with limited resources is very difficult. I am sure that William Bloomer would have welcomed information on badges that were unknown to him P.B.

That Queensland Camerons badge was worn from 1930 to around 1942.
Its an Australian badge so most likely why it isn't in that book. Mick |

The 61st Bn was raised in 1938 with the expansion of the AMF. Disbanded in 1942.
Excellent badge |

Thanks Seanus. That's valuable information. The first 61st Bn began to be raised in 1916 as part of the 6th Australian Division but it and the Division was disbanded due the losses at Fromelles and on the Somme. It never appeared on the ORBAT again until sometime in the 1930's. Thank you for pinpointing the date. It makes sense given the increase in Defence spending at that time.
Mick, Cossum's dates can't be applied to all of the badges in his book. They are dubious and in many cases dead wrong. Cheers Chris |

That's right - I'm slowly trying to find correct dates but its a slow and very pain staking task.
