Glamorgan Local Militia
I have been lucky enough recently to pick up the central device of an officer's SBP to the West Glamorgan Militia as shown in the 1st photo. Obviously it is missing the lower Calamus (quill/shaft) and the crown overlay when compared with an old photo in Bryn Owen's Welsh Militia & Volunteer Corps, Vol 3, Glamorgan (Part 2), as shown in the photo extract from Bryn’s book. Worn 1808-1816.
Not to be confused with the regular or county Militia, the Local Militia regiments stem for the 1808 Local Militia Act, which was an attempt by the government of the day to exert more control over the early volunteer movement dating from the start of the 19th Century. Needless to say it is very difficult to find badges from this period, so I was very pleased to add it to my other bits relating to the Glamorgan Local Militia, namely an officer's gilded button with Nutting back mark, officer's silvered button to the Central Glamorgan Militia and an ORs SBP.
