Large M above small X on Laurels.
I've spent quite some time going through military books and online resources, without luck. Does anyone out there know anything about this badge. Thank you.

I've seen a similar badge with a smaller letter "H" inside the laurels for a Height taker. So maybe this is for a mortarman???

I do not believe this to be an X rather just part of the wreath.

I think this may be "Midland Railway" related. The X is none existent, its the ribboning on the bottom of the wreath.

I agree. The X is incidental. I checked out "Midland Railway" altcar, but no joy. They seemed to prefer using both initials with a rope effect. Thank you all.

I can confirm that this IS a Midland Railway related badge. The Midland Railway "griffin" is missing from the top of it. I'm unable to show any images due to copyright issues. However, the badge is shown on Plate 13 of "Railway Buttons, Badges & Uniforms" by David J. Froggatt. It is described as a "Ball Badge", whatever that is. I hope this is helpful.

Thanks for that Dave. Not a cheap book to buy, so I guess I'll have to join some sort of Railway forum.
