Default Royal Warwickshire Collar badges

I've always had the left badge for as long as I have remembered and jumped at the chance of buying the right badge when I saw it in a shop for sale . As most compulsive buys go they don't match ? Are they both ROYAL WARWICKSHIRE REGIMENT COLLAR BADGES or have I got it completely wrong . I'm looking for a pair for my WW1 collection . Any thoughts ?

Smile Royal Warwickshire Regiment collars

The left hand badge is a Warwickshire Regt collar badge, Churchill's book shows a left hand collar badge with the antelope standing on ground. Your badge is a right hand collar and they were the first pattern after the bear and staff. It is stated in the book that they were worn for a very short time only and not in pairs, however your RH badge seems to disprove this theory.

Wasnt the right hand badge worn as a field service dress cap badge, I seem to remember an article in the MHS Bulletin or somewhere else, will try and check it out when I have some more time

Would the left hand badge have been worn in WW1 ?
Or would that be the right hand badge ?

Default curious collar

Warwicks Cap & collars.jpg

Hi Spencer. I must admit your left hand collar badge puzzles me a bit. I have not got Churchill's latest book, but I do have an earlier one on collar badges which he wrote jointly with Ray Westlake. Also there is Wilkinson's book which features a few collars. But in both these, the antelope is shown on a heraldic bar (or torse) and neither show it on a "ground" base ! Also, the details I have on PT collars (1874-1881) say the brass antelope stands on an heraldic bar. The late Hugh King had one of these in his collection. Your wm collar is definately R.Warwickshire, since the design is unique to the regiment. But, I notice that, on the post 1881 HPC's, the antelope is (unusually) shown like this (ie on a "ground"), so I can only assume that Sonofacqms is correct when he says it was an early pattern (post 1881) collar and not worn for very long. Also I am sure Churchill is wrong in saying that it was not issued as a facing pair. If so, it would have been the only case I know where they were not ! The version I show (above) is the more common and usual type, also in wm, and, at a guess I would say your left hand badge would be well before WW1 and quite rare. Regards. Jeff
PS: Further information from WO359 would possibly date this as 1881 to 1904, which states that, after this date all four feet should be at rest on the "torse".

Pete,
it could be either a Cap or Collar as those rings look like replacements for either blades or lugs? I would not clean OSDs too vigorously, hot soap water and an old soft tooth brush should do the trick!

Default Warwicks collar badges?

Hi
I wonder if anyone can help me identify the period or regiment which these collars belong to. I am guesing they relate to Warwicks as they look like their bear, they have a gilt appearance.

Thanks

Rob

Hi Rob,
They look like the early pattern collar badges for the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, worn prior to 1890. Very nice, if genuine badges.
Cheers, Tinto

Default Royal Warwickshire collar dogs

Hi all,
I recently picked up a 40 patt battle dress for an officer in the Warwickshire regiment. It has had at some point a pair of collar dogs but officers are too big for the holes. Does anyone have any idea what type would have been worn ? I would say it was post war use.
Thanks for your help,
Fez
