Might have been a blank that the man wrote his details on as a label to tie to a bag or repirator or another bit of kit?
Having said that, its got his religion on it.

I have this one written in ink and apart from being ( presumably ) National Fire Service, I know nothing about it.

Under the 1920 numbering system this number would have fallen within the 1 - 294000 block for RASC.

The lance bombardier probably lost his stamped disc and wrote that one out to tide him over until he got a replacement.

He should not have his unit on the disc, that defeats the object of the post 1920 numbers "blocks".

That being said, I know for a fact that the Germans had full details of the blocks anyway. Probably captured the information in France in 1940?

Many thanks to all.

As written on tag, J H Young was a Lance bombardier, belonging to Royal Artillery.

Can we guess year of enlistment from an army number ?

Thanks

Here's the number series in table form:

http://www.northeastmedals.co.uk/mm/...ce_numbers.htm

He's pre 1942 or he would have a number beginning 14?

if even amounts of numbers were being allocated each year then he would be about 1927, but WW2 will muck that up. But you could say he has a number allocated '1927-1942' (probably)

Thanks again.
