I'm always suspicious. I'm thinking that perhaps Steve is doing a publicity stunt here, for his site, to show off some new stock.
Which famous collector has passed away lately? Out of curiosity. Perhaps I am out of line here, but, it all seems a bit of a coincidence. A badge dealer just happens to find a tin of badges in a metal bin at his local tip. The famous line, I found all my grandad's kit in the shed/loft/basement, springs to mind.

Thanks, Steve, for being accomodating.
I believe I can see some Hunt buttons but unclear of the design. Possibly having to do with the 12th Lancers? Incidentally, could the tin be Lancers cap tin? The rank patch looks Italian GTB |

There was a dealer on my local market a few years back that would often spin a yarn very similar to this concerning where his latest and very impressive finds had come from. It was amusing to see how he would have some hanging onto every word, whilst us that knew him would be less impressed..... Truth be told, it was often some poor unsuspecting widow or someone down on their luck that he had secured them from for a very good price that would enable us mere mortals to buy them for a bargain Now come on Phil, give Steve the benefit of the doubt mate, these things do happen. Although, if my humble collection of shiny fings were chucked in a skip, even my pet sock puppet would know to dig them out when no one was looking and wack 'em on ebay Were you there Steve when these where "dumped", or are you lucky enough to have an insider (and I know how awkward these refuse technicians can be!)? Peace out, N |

Yes tip finds do happen - not for me alas ... when brother and I first started collecting well over 50 years ago, we used to meet up with a veteran in the village. He was like 'Fagin' - all the bin men used to go to see him with their finds ... in the days when a lot of wartime stuff etc was being binned. I always recall him being handed over a mint condition 3rd Cheshire Rifle Volunteers helmet in tin. Given our later specialist interest the '1er Bllon FM Commando' beret badge he received trumped even that.

So, I thought I would give this a go........
Went to my local tip yesterday, but it was closed I was eaten up with curiosity, so tried to peek through the gap in the fence, but all I could see was rubbish However, before I left I saw a box in the corner with some shiny things in Could this be what I had heard tell of? I was up at 4am this morning unable to contain my excitement and flew down the tip on my tricycle. after waiting for 4 hours, the gates finally opened and I was allowed in, my eyes full of wonder at the magical joys that awaited only to be rudely interrupted by some chap in a brightly coloured vest. "What do you want?". I explained that I had been told that I could find badges here and gingerly pointed to the box of shiny things in the corner. He turned and looked and I could see that my prize was now slipping from my grasp He grunted and walked away. hang on I thought, the prize is mine! After dodging many traps and crossing many obstacles that required the use of my trusty bullwhip I sidled up to my prize........... I looked and could see the shiny things that I had seen the day before......... I opened the lid...... SPRINGS! B####r it! I turned and fled, managing to dodge various projectiles and things that I heard rumbling, but wouldn't look back at and landed outside the main gate and safety. I picked myself up and dusted myself down and started to walk away. I just couldn't help myself and turned around...... I couldn't believe what I was seeing, a large van with B******T INSIGNIA on the side being loaded with boxes and boxes of unseen treasures So, I had been beaten this time, but I would be back and this time, I would bring my dog |

Tip tales!!!
Over thirty years ago when visiting friends in Devon I was told an acquaintance of theirs worked in a tip/scrapyard and he said every time they found any badges they were thrown in an old tin bath.
One day a sharp eyed visitor spotted the bath and offered them five pounds for it and the contents which was gratefully accepted. I have often wondered what that bath contained, I can only dream . . ! Rob |

Around 20 odd years ago I paid a visit to a local "any old iron" yard and tentatively asked if there were any badges, buttons etc. The owner said that only the other day he had disposed of two 45-gallon drums filled to the brim with buttons. "Disposed of" meaning sold for brass value only.
