Northamptonshire Regt Shoulder Flash
Would be grateful for any assistance regarding this scan which is part of a photo I have of a Northamptonshire Regiment Territorial Band and a very small one at that - just 9 players strong. There are no medal ribbons to give any indication of the date although one member wears 3 GC chevrons, so that this points to it being either pre-WW1 or sometime in the mid to late 1920's or early 1930's. On the shoulders that are visible all are wearing metal Northamptonshire titles. What is a complete mystery to me, however, is the Sergeant who is wearing a cloth shoulder flash or title on both arms. He is the only one in the photo with these and they seem too low from the point of the shoulder to be Regimental flashes - has anyone any idea as to what these could be please?
Many thanks Peter4448 |

My first reaction is pre-WWI based on the white bell tents to the rear..hope that starts the discussion for you Peter.

Another possible pre-WW1 indicator is that the Sergeant's Service Dress jacket is of early pattern and appears to have narrow shoulder cords rather than cloth epaulettes on which the brass titles, which replaced cloth shoulder titles circa 1908, are worn.
