Merchant Marine torpedo badge
Can anyone advise me if these were awarded in WW2 as well as WW1? I have my late grandfathers badges and included are both a torpedo badge and a bar. I know he was torpedoed once in each war, but if the badge wasn't awarded in WW2 I have a missing sinking which I can't find in his discharge books!
Thanks. |

Hi,
Are you referring to the service badge for australian torpedoed merchant navy sailors? which can be found by following the 2nd link (service badges) listed in my initial post here https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...ad.php?t=83820 ? I discovered this badge by reading the article. I am not aware though if it was issued too to non australian sailors, or also to british merchant navy sailors who’s ship had been torpedoed, neither if sailors who got it during ww1 were still allowed to keep wearing it during all their carreer at sea (ie possibly including until ww2)? Any information on this welcome too. Cheers, JD |

Thanks.
And now remains only the other question: any equivalent badge worn by british merchant sailors (torpedoed aboard non australian ships)? Cheers, JD |

The badges were issued by the Board of Trade in Britian and are not a country specific item.
Yes, sailors from other Commonwealth countries did get awarded the badge. I have not seen any statute of limitations for the wearing of the badge and I presuming that they could be worn indefinitely. I have one red and one in gold. Barry Last edited by nbroadarrowz; 21-08-23 at 12:03 PM. Reason: More detail |
