Jo thanks for the link to this little known subject.
I had come across references to the black troops in World War One while doing some research on the 208th Irish Overseas Bn and the 180th Sportsman Bn. If I recall correctly there were a couple of letters between the the Battalions and the Ministry of Defense where the Battalion did not wish to have them in their Battalions. It certainly gave me something to reflect on.

Hi Ray & Clifford. Not the best part of our country's history (forgetting them)but, which country can say they had one without any blemishes? Also, what about the black soldiers that served in 2ndWW?

I would recommend Calvin Ruck's The Black Battalion and DND's For My Country: Black Canadians on the Field of Honour.

Yes, I would recommend Calvin Ruck's book too. I also have this badge, which I suspect is a restrike, but a nice memento of the unit all the same.

I know he's not Canadian but, we are very proud of Walter Tull here in Northamptonshire, England. He was the first British-born black army officer and the first black officer to lead white British troops into battle. Sadly he like many men of his era was KIA during WW1. He was awarded the British War and Victory Medal and recommended for a Military Cross.
He played for my local team Northampton Town Football Club and there is memorial to him outside the stadium which is a focal point every remeberence day. |

Jo - great web link - thanks. There's currently not much else to sing about on the terraces at the "cobblers" these days. But on a serious note the black and Indian contribution to WW1/WW2 needs to be highlighted a little more in my mind - and I'm not talking about dear old Holywood. Cheers - David.

Here is my little contribution to this thread. The display shows some of the insigina of the Nr. 2 Construction and a couple of victory medals that are in my collection. I believe that Rev. White of the Battalion was the only black man commissioned in the CEF not certain about the rest of the empire. The Victorys are both Sappers and born in Nova Scotia. I also have a few items belonging to Capt. Anderson of the Nr. 2 Construction including his cap and greatcoat both named to him.
