A misstruck Northamptonshire Regiment, looks like the pre-standardization Castle of Gibralter, with flag atop the middle tower?

Indeed the pre 1900 Gibraltar Castle, but a slidered badge, interesting. The verdigris needs to be stopped.

The unusual slider looks to be a later addition?

Could very well be, were the lugs North/south oriented? There are no visible traces of lugs in the east/west position. By the way, I'm quite fond of misstampings like this, the worse the merrier.

I don't think it is a copy and why your grandfather had it is a question that would be very difficult to answer, although, I dare say he might have just liked it.
Getting hold of a normal example would not present any issues whatsoever. |

Thats a good badge "Long Key" not hard to find but an example like this is quirky, I like it for what it is!

Bi-metal ones are easy to find. Not many white metal ones about, though.

Looks like a mistrike that was identified as such before completion so no lugs and the slider added at a later date.

How about this one then ?
You can look long and hard at it, ...... It is a double striking, the first strike has the Royal cypher in the middle. The second strike has moved through 45 degrees for some unknown reasons and caused the blobbing effect to the Royal Cypher. Making this badge a total disaster, .... yet very hard to spot.
