Default The SAS White beret

Does anyone know anything about this apparently short-lived SAS headdress?

Where was it made? Who if anybody authorised it? When was it introduced/worn?

I know it has been discussed before on the Berets thread but that did not seem to shed much light on the subject.

Any help appreciated.

Jon

Haven't read the full article but first photo has this description :

Quote:
Standing from left to right, three men of L.R.D.G. (Long Range Desert Group), Alan H.C. Nutt, F.R. Brown and I.G. Mc Culloch 'Snowy'. Sitting: Sergeant Edward John Almonds 'Gentleman Jim' and Lance-Corporal Robert Lilley. These two are S.A.S. men and wear the white beret , mocked and contested by New Zealand and Australian troops.

Two notes, direct from an original, regarding the beret and badge.

"About the white beret. They were only an experiment and were never issued as we came to the conclusion that they got dirty too quickly and were not practical."

The badge, designed at the same time by Sergeant Bob Tait, had the motto 'Who Dares Wins'. Not sure if it has been in print before but the original motto on Tait's design was 'Strike and Destroy', which was apparently considered 'too stern' by David Stirling and dismissed. The next suggestion was 'Descend to Ascend' which didn't find favour either, and so came 'Who Dares Wins'.
