I never knew there were so many 'variations' , are the three examples in the photos all police ?

The third badge is Oldham Tramways. The Oldham badge in the opening post was never used by Oldham Tramways.

Thanks , I'm easily confused between 'finishes' and have seen Tramways badge in brass and chromed.

Every day I learn something new.

The first badge is a broken version of the second. The second and third were used by the police.

These badges are made up of two parts. The centre is from a standard die featuring the Borough Arms. The wreath is from a separate die, the size and design of which can vary depending on the whim of the manufacturers. Differing batches made years apart can have a smaller/larger wreath. The manufacturing process simply consists of the centre shield being sweated to the wreath. No significance should be attached to these variations.

Thanks Dave , I appreciate you taking the time to give me an explanation.

I don't mean to be a pain in the ass by asking dumb/obvious questions , as a relative 'newbie' any information I can gleam from others is always helpful.

Cheers.

Hi,
Here are your buttons:
row 1:
1. general service (1902-1952)
by C.H.C. & Co Ltd, Birmingham
2. stock design merchant navy
by J.R. Gaunt & Son Ltd, London Eng.
3. Air Raid Precautions, WWII
by Cheney, Birmingham
4. a fashion button
row 2: small size general service buttons
Two of these are by Regal Button Works Ltd, Birminham
and the third one by Firmin, London

Some of these button makers can be found here:
https://oldcopper.org/makers/birmingham_brassmakers.php

best regards,
