Thank you for the correction, Luke. So, 7th not 15th and no modification to the lug. I understand that only the Australian, New Zealand, and Rhodesian SAS wore the metal cap badge. British SAS only wore cloth badges on their berets.

The anodised SAS cap badge was shown on British Army recruiting posters throughout the 1970s and 1980s. As a result many badges were indented for by QM departments and displayed on the poster. The anodised badge is still available through the stores system!

As Alan said in post #2 it was sealed for the TA.

21 SAS did wear No1 Dress Caps on Parades in the 1960s as this is recorded in a painting of an event at their HQ at The JS Staff College at Shrivenham that came of the old Staff College at Camberley. These caps had metal badges.

The Osprey "SAS book" has a colour illustration of a 21st SAS officer wearing a (dark blue and light blue) forage cap with a metal badge for the Coronation parade in 1953, I think the badge is described as bimetal, presumably it's silver and gilt.

I cannot believe I did not think about the peaked cap!

Gentlemen, thank you again for all of the posts.

I have collected as many of the different versions of the Army Dress Regulations as I can find, but have always focused on the sections related to the Scottish regiments. I probably skimmed right over references to the SAS.

I should have looked at Frederick Wilkinson's book. The SAS badge is number 96!

I apologize and hope I did not waste your time. Of course, I learned a lot from your posts, especially about the 7th Middlesex cap badge, that I doubt I would find many other places than this forum.

Regards

Reid
