Essex volunteer?
Hi, I got this in northern Italy from an old friend who's had it for more than thirty years, not that that means anything, but it's completely out of my field. What I would like to know is, is it a copy? and secondly what would the hole in the base be for? Thanks in advance, Mike

No idea, but I have 2 Vol Btn helmet plate centres in my collection and both have the standard 4 hoops at the back to go through the slots in the universal type helmet plate. I don't even know if mine are genuine but I think they are. It would seem strange to me that yours is made in the universal type pattern but is a one-piece. I would think it's a repro just from that but my knowledge of VB helmet plates is close to zero, which is not far behind my general knowledge of badges!

Most of the other ranks Volunteer helmet plates in my collection are one piece, i.e. the centre is brazed to the back plate. Peter

Its a very genuine O/R's helmet plate, typical of VB plate construction.

Agreed , they are often one piece . the hole may be where it has been nailed to a board for display. Nice helmet plate.

Hmmm, I'm not quite so confident I'm afraid. The reason being I got one a few weeks ago but in brass and with no sign of it ever being blackened. Won on ebay cheaply and pretty much uncontested made me wonder why no dealer had made a bid as a good mark up would be made.
It has the same flaw under the L as well as the chunky A plus the slightly distorted/twisted under appearance to the bottom of the blank scroll. The metal is also heavier and less flexible than similar VB plates I have. Another point is that all the Essex VB glengarries have VOLR (Small underscored R) likewise the 1st VB HP that I have. Until I see one in an old collection mine is in the not sure box.
