Regiment identification if possible
I would appreciate it if anyone could identify, if at all possible, this gentleman's regiment from these two obscure photos.
Many thanks Peter |

Royal Marines?
Would the collar badge silhouettes fit Paddington Rifles? |

The collar badges look like Canadian General Service maple leaves. My first thought is first world war, Canadian Engineers.

Initially I thought possibly maple leaf collars and I checked through illustrations of the Engineer's cap badge but didn't know that such collars would be worn with that cap badge (hence my usual mission creep to encompass other units).
I'd agree maple leaf collars would be a first choice. |

Thank you to all for your replies ! Much appreciated. The thought about being Canadian has got be thinking of a possible link to someone. I'm going to look into it.

further - Regiment identification
Looking into it further the photos are cropped from a group photo that was in the possession of someone who has links to a person who originally served in the Royal Engineers from 1881 to 1908 (Sgt Major).
In 1914 he re-enlisted in the Royal Engineers, immediately made QMS and then transferred to the Canadian Engineers. He was in the Canadian Expeditionary Force to France from 1915 to 1919. He received the MC in 1916. I noticed a motif on his right sleeve. I don't know if this is helpful in anyway Thanks again for your inputs Peter |

It looks to be the badge for a Warrant Officer Class 1, on both arms.

Agree with Leigh - the Royal Arms in gilding metal/brass like this:

I thought the cap badge looked like RE, but the Canada posts put me off commenting.

I think that that's a nice conclusion. Now you know that it dates from 1915-19 then you have the opportunity to potentially match up the other family members in the picture.

If you have a name for this soldier the Canadian Great War enlistment records have all survived and are on line.
