Hello! I just have received this beautiful sidecap...The buttons are not GS, neither regimentals...It looks like Navy buttons...Royal Navy used the kakhi FS cap?...or maybe It is a RM sidecap?...thanks for your help!

An interesting find.

In the early 1970s I bought a similar cap with such buttons attached, from an Army surplus dealer.

I never managed to find an answer and in the end decided that they had probably been stitched on by the dealer to make them more saleable than caps without securing buttons.

Happy to be proved wrong if there is another answer.

It would be possible to be a Royal Navy commando FS cap?

There is mention of the RM Khaki Field Service Cap in an article :

Field Service Cap by Major Alastair Donald R.M

Quote:
RM Other Ranks - Second World War

.... and from 1940 there are a number of photographs of recruits at the Reserve Depot (now Lympstone) wearing the khaki FS cap with service dress. In 1940 RM dispatch riders were authorised to wear a brown leather chin strap with the khaki FS cap.

I found this picture about Royal Navy commando...

http://gallery.commandoveterans.org/...+1942.jpg.html

the member who show that picture also show a picture of his father in a Facebook Page about RNBC and you can see him wearing a FS cap...(I coloured the face in black to preserve his intimity)

Why black the face? He has passed so who is going to recognise him?

Well...I know that he shows the picture of his father on a public dominion (Facebook) but well ..I don't know if he would be happy if I use his picture...I only wanted to be polite...but you are right...I am not using his picture for nothing else but talk about British uniforms...maybe I was too polite...

The picture is also on the Commando Veterans website and is the only one showing an RN Commando wearing a khaki FS cap ?

Regarding the hat , on the same site there are photos showing a group from 40RM (training ?) all wearing khaki FS caps.

Close up photo of RM cap.

For those (like me) who don't have/want a Facebook account is a link to the Commando Veterans Archive website which has great info and photos.

They look a bit like Officers buttons, have they got spun backs?

Sorry...I don't know what is a "spun back" but as you can see, the buttons are sewn...

Officers spun back buttons are virtually seamless like this one, top quality as you would expect for an officer.

Other ranks buttons can be fixed shank or drop shank but the front is quite visibly crimped around the back.

Of course there are occasion when Officers wear lesser quality buttons and I dare say the other way around too, but its a pretty good quide.
