Naval Officer's souvenir pennant.
I have been buying some of the effects of a deceased Royal Naval officer whose family are dealing with his estate. Having already bought his dress uniform and other small items, I bought this pennant from the family.
It was not meant to be a flag as it is one sided but there is the space for a pole sewn into the left hand side so was probably displayed against a wall. My question is, was it made as a souvenir for the officer's amusement or does it signify something else? |

Did the naval officer serve on submarines?
The skull and crossbones is an emblem of the submarine service. Keith

Are they still displayed by submarines?
I seem to remember that they were "banned" by authority a few years back? |

Not to my knowledge but I haven't fully researched his career yet. From his medal ribbons he appears to have crossed a few oceans. The lowest ribbon is for the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve Decoration. I do not know what the rose signifies.

thats' not a Falklands ribbon, it's the ribbon of the Atlantic Star with the rosette signifying the award of a clasp (probably France & Germany) Paul |

He wasn't from Poole was he? Piracy was our local career of choice for about 500 years, a fact still commemorated by the local speedway team "Poole Pirates". (If you weren't cut out to be a pirate smuggling was also popular).

No, not from Poole, he came from Chepstow. He is listed as serving on H.M.S. Tormentor, a shore establishment at Warsash, in the early part of the war.
HMS Tormentor Function: Minor landing craft operational base including maintenance, also an operational training base for craft of Force J Flotilla in Aug 1941. Address and commissioning history: Hamble, Southampton, located in the Household Brigade Yacht Club. It was commissioned from 12/8/40 to 31/3/46. |

Cap badge of the Household Brigade Yacht Club and the later Household Division Yacht Club. Just as the club was mentioned.
