1881 was the year of the Cardwell reforms when the old Regiments of Foot were amalgamated to form county regiments. Their badges would obviously have changed but the crowns remained the same.

The flat topped crown I believe you are referring to found on cap badges worn in the QVC era was Queen Victoria’s Imperial State Crown made in 1838.

The ‘myth’ (?) you refer to are rather a shorthand colloquial terminology for the St. Edward’s crown (QC) and Tudor crown (KC).

Indeed the QVC as it is commonly referred to is just a more stylised shape to the St. Edward’s crown used by the current monarch.

The Tudor Crown is an heraldic crown that does not correspond to an actual crown. There was a physical crown known as the Tudor Crown that was destroyed in the 17th century. That is not the one that I a referring to. The imperial state crown is a separate crown and was not the one that was interchangeable used with St. Edwards Crown during the later part of Queen Victoria's rule.

Suggestions as to what we should rename the Crowns for our collecting purposes, something convenient and workable, other than "The Not Tudor Crown" etc?

I tended to use Victorian (for the big eared Victorian), Jubilee (for the flat topped Victorian, Durbar), King's (or Tudor), St Edward's (or current Queen's) worked for me.
Yes, I knew that "Durbar" was an inaccurate term as some regiments who used the Crown on their badges didn't attend the bash but if someone said it I knew what it meant.

If you want to research everything that is your choice , others treat collecting as a pastime/hobby and are happy at their own level of knowledge.
