Hi Guys
Thanks for the interesting debate.
I had always assumed that companies like Anderson's, Lawson, etc, and other outfitters just ordered the badges unmarked from established manufacturers and then had their own retailer marks stamped onto the badges?
Cheers,
Alex

You do certainly see that, on occasion, for example, the QAIMNS silver Tippet badges for Sisters were usually made and hallmarked in Birmingham, but were actually sold to their recipient by a Regent Street jeweller, after they had added their company name.

I assume the badge is two piece with the separate backing plate held on with three copper wires. given the force required to stamp the cartouches is it safe to assume this was done prior to the badge being assembled ? food for thought.

Hallmarks would be the manufacturer's responsibility (via Assay Office) but who would be legally responsible for 'sterling' mark , the manufacturer or the retailer ?

I would have thought the manufacturer, I should imagine the vast majority of tailors who supplied officers kit would not be bothered, although, they would want to see a customer with a silver cap badge, rather than just plate, if that was what had been ordered, after all, their customers account had to be settled.

Very nice too, not an inexpensive thing to go out and buy these days.

Hi SW
I hadn't thought about that but then again, hallmarks were done after manufacture, so there must be a safe process for doing it.
Cheers,
Alex

I would think that the marks could only be applied to the back plate prior to assembly, for example, the Foot Guard cap stars that they manufactured had enamel between the gilt overlay and silver star, but, they are still well and very precisely marked.

I've always considered L&Co to be Ludlow in the same way J&Co is agreed to be Jennens. However, I can offer no evidence to back up my opinion.
