Haven't had a what is it question for a long time.
Here is a legitimate badge. Ten points for the correct back story.

Hello Bill, It looks like a Victorian helmet plate to the Notts & Derby Regiment (Sherwood Foresters), or something related to that regiment, maybe Militia. I can't seem to find anything in Kipling & King, but maybe someone else will put things straight.

Looks like a Grey and Simcoe Foresters k/c collar badge and the whole assembly looks cast.
Were these made for soldiers/cadets in a tattoo?

That's the unit I was thinking of, haven't a clue apart the basic design when it comes to their insignia.

I just took another look at it and realized it's Grey & Simcoe Foresters, although I still think it's some sort of helmet plate.

Canadian unit - put it in Canadian sub forum?

Only just noticed - it's there already.

Narrowing it down. It is a G & SF collar fastened to a qvc style helmet plate, but the plate is actually made from a resin material with tang back.

The answer to Bill's question (shown in the title) is; Crap.

To ease the pain, the badge was a fantasy shako plate made up for the 1967 Centennial project of the Grey & Simcoe Foresters. Members of the unit dressed in 1867 period uniforms marched from Penetanguishene to Owen Sound formally announcing Confederation at municipalities along the way. They had mounted officers and a "chuck" wagon, along with a behind the scenes support contingent.
